March 11, 1920

My Darling,

You were mighty good not to scold me in your letter written Monday night. I expected a good calling down. Please don't scold me when your letters are returned. My trip is broken up and can't work out my schedule. I should have left deposit at 11:40 for Hancock where I expected to connect with

O&W and at East Branch connect with Delaware and Northern for Downsville at 1:45. Erie was late and missed connection. Now I can't get train for Downsville until 1:45 tomorrow afternoon-only one train each way a day. Tomorrow is Friday and so have had to give up going to Downsville as I have two or three other towns to work in that section. I am going to Delhi tonight at 8:00 o'clock but don't know exactly where I'll go from there. It has been a big disappointment not to keep to my route this week. I may decide to

go to Margaretville tomorrow night.

I got two orders in Deposit this morning. One from Kelly & Stimmans cut glass manufacturer for $269.97--“Call of The Hills” and one from a feed concern for $105. Have one order here tonight for $48.

Wish you would take two blotters of each of my “12 Mother Goose Rhymes” and mail the package to Mr. A.P. Stimmans of Deposit. He has some little kiddies.

One thing comes out of our income return which shows our net income to be $5874.29 for 1919, and that is where in the D has the money gone? Will try to get these reports off to you in the morning. Send the two white blanks to “Collector of Internal Revenue” Norwich and send a check for $130.97--better use personal check. Send yellow one with a check for $33.34 to New York State Income Tax Bureau of Syracuse. Better use personal checks in each case. Your loving John

I have copies so you won't need to copy reports.

[Written on envelope] Attend to these matters so mail can get out Saturday

Editor's notes

John notes that his tax returns indicate that their net income was $5874.29 for 1919. That is the equivalent of an income of $100,608.72 in 2022 dollars. One thing that hasn't changed is the question he poses to Sue-"where in the D has the money gone?"

Does “D” mean “devil?”
