Editor's Notes
John again notes the Straders competition which seems to be an Osborne Company Sales competition. In this letter, John refers to another salesman riding with him. In previous letters he's referenced getting a ride with other men from one town to another. It seems it may be the custom and culture of the times for salesman to hitch rides with each other around mid-York. John seems to be now exclusively using his car, whereas 10 years ago he was almost always taking the train throughout upstate New York.
John writes about Children's Day in his letter. Marion will mention it as well in a letter that's coming later this week. This must have been a big deal in the 1920s. The tradition dates back to 1856 when the Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard, pastor of the Universalist Church of the Redeemer in Chelsea, Massachusetts, held a special service focused on children.

My Sweetheart:
Your dear letter written Tuesday has done me a lot of good-it seemed to be just what I needed. Have been going rather slowly and I'm not covering much territory. I did not get into Cobleskill until 7:00 o'clock tonight, had supper and as I could not get a room, I started out and worked Howes Cave and am here for the night and am rather tired. We have fine little orders today for a total of $95. Pretty small peanuts, but every order counts for the Straders. I have had pleasant company all day and will have tomorrow. A Mr. Newton, a cigar salesman started out from Cherry Valley with me this morning and will ride with me tomorrow.
Please keep your mind open about my coming home this week. You can believe I'll come home if I can make it. Will not try to go into Catskills at all this week if I am to come home.
I don't know whether I have any automobile soap at the house or not. If I haven't wish you would have Frank go to garage and get a pound or two.
I am anxious to be at home for Children's Day but can't tell for certain to night.
Except a heart full of love and one kiss -big one from
Jack.

If you're new to this project, please consider going to our site and catching up with a few letters from the 1900-1910 era. The letters only take 3-5 minutes to read and you'll find the characters more fully develop if you read the letters chronologically.
John has excellent handwriting. However, in some instances, I cant decipher it. If I can't, I simply mark the spot with "xxx"s to signify thank the word isn't decipherable.
